Spring is just around the corner, and puppies are finding their way into new homes. Tips for the new puppy owner :
Let the puppy settle in for a day or two before training: a puppy's new home is like "warping" into a foreign land - new rules, all new smells, no furry littermates to find comfort in.... a potentially scary place! It's up to us, the new owner, to show them what is expected. ALWAYS praise for good behavior no matter if they do the same thing 100 times! Everyone likes to know when they do well! Oh, and just because the puppy does someting correct one time, does NOT mean they "know it." Puppies, like us, sometimes do the right thing purely on accident! It's best to keep your things WAY out of reach; shoes, kids toys, newspapapers (oh it's amazing the mess millions of shredded newspapers can make), books, phones, remotes, etc. Anything in their reach is "game on."
Do you have some behavioral problems with your puppy or dog? Do you compete in the ring and have trouble on a particular area? Steve and I are pleased to say that since I "came on board" (no Pun intended ;-) I am bringing vast dog obedience knowledge to Vagabond Hound. Ask me questions by blog, text, or email: I will have suggestions for you on how to fix the problem.
